-- The Fifteenth Sunday in Trinitytide -- August 28, 2016

"God wants us to follow him and be united with other believers (Jer 2:4-13). He also wants for us to be generous and just (Ps 112), free from the love of money, full of hospitality, good works (Heb 13:1-8, 15-16) and humility (Lk 14:1, 7-14)."
- Thomas Oden in Ancient Christian Devotional

Psalms of the Week
Scripture Readings
Psalm 81:1, 10-16

"Sing for joy to God our strength;
    shout aloud to the God of Jacob!

I am the Lord your God,
    who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.

“But my people would not listen to me;
    Israel would not submit to me.
So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
    to follow their own devices..."

Psalm 112

"Praise the Lord.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
    who find great delight in his commands.

Their children will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures forever..."

Jeremiah 2:4-13
Proverbs 25:6-7
Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16
Luke 14:1, 7-14

Prayer of the Week (from Sundays and Seasons)

"O God, you resist those who are proud and give grace to those who are humble. Give us the humility of your Son, that we may embody the generosity of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord."

Commentary on Luke 14:1, 7-14
"It is a manifestation of pride to boast of the gifts of God, as if there were any excellence in ourselves, that would exalt us on the ground of our own merit. Humility, on the other hand, must be not only an unfeigned abasement, but a real annihilation of ourselves, proceeding from a thorough knowledge of our own weakness, the entire absence of lofty pretensions, and a conviction that whatever excellence we possess comes from the grace of God alone."
