The Thirteenth Sunday in Trinitytide (Year C) August 14, 2016

"The fire of judgment and the water of baptism were symbols of Jesus' compelling call to ministry; they still are. What one enflames, the other can quench. Jesus forecasts a time of division when households will be divided. WIthin the household of faith, baptism is the sacrament that binds us together; whatever our differences, we are still one. As the body of Christ, obey what Christ teaches and be reconciled one to another."
- Rev. James Kirk in When We Gather: A Book of Prayers for Worship

Scripture Readings
Psalm 80:1-2; 8-19

"Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
    you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who sit enthroned between
the cherubim...
Awaken your might;
    come and save us...."

Psalm 82

"God presides in the great assembly;
    he renders judgment among the “gods”:

 How long will you defend the unjust
    and show partiality to the wicked?
 Defend the weak and the fatherless;
    uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
 Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked..."

Invocation (by Everett Tilson and Phyllis Cole)

O God, your name is in our hearts; you are a burning fire shut up in our bones. We are weary with holding it in - we can hold it no longer. Lord! Maker! Savior! Helper! See us; behold our thoughts, and know us! To you we commit our cause; to you we entrust our life! With all our hearts we seek you---baptize us with your presence!

Commentary on Luke 12:49-56
"Love is good, having wings of burning fire that flies through the saints’ breasts and hearts and consumes whatever is material and earthly but tests whatever is pure. With its fire, love makes whatever it has touched better. The Lord Jesus sent this fire on earth. Faith shined brightly. Devotion was enkindled. Love was illuminated. Justice was resplendent. With this fire, he inflamed the heart of his apostles, as Cleophas bears witness, saying, “Was not our heart burning within is, while he was explaining the Scriptures?” The wings of fire are the flames of the divine Scripture."
Music for Listening (Trinitytide)
Dave Brubeck stands as one of the all time greatest Jazz musicians that the USA has ever produced. A late convert to Roman Catholicism, he wrote this Mass shortly before his conversion. To Hope! A Celebration defies categorization, "...it is simply great music," dedicated to the glory of God. Favorite tracks include "Lord Have Mercy" and "While He Was at Supper."

One of my favorite CCM albums is Michael Card's 2006 release "Soul Anchor." Well produced and eclectic, it covers major themes from the book of Hebrews. I was again reminded of this album after reading the Epistle text for this coming Sunday from Hebrews 11. Take a listen, then explore more of his catalog!
